LAST MINUTE GARDEN SALVAGE

Before the STUPID snow fell last weekend, we scrambled up the hill to our gardens and salvaged what we could.

Given the fact that we were robbed of a proper spring and mid-summer harvest due to the stupidest groundhogs in the world, it was like Christmas in October when we pulled up an entire row of carrots through the protective wire tent nate built.  AND let me just say, these carrots are DARLINGS!

Ranging in size from pretty big to itty bitty, we gladly tasted several and were totally excited that they were sweeeeeeet!

Here are some of our larger specimens.

This one was the biggest.

and look at that PRIMO soil. yes it was blended with sand to give those carrots a bit more of a chance.

Tulia was super excited to be picking.  she pranced around like a little rabbit.

We picked the swiss chard next and then hacked the dill. We've got so much darn dill and we don't know what else to do with it. dill is so strong and wonderful but it can overpower quickly. I had already harvested the hot and bell peppers a few days prior and the tomatoes are completely done. So yeah, that was it.

The last basket of the season.  There was still an enormous amount of dill left and the house-side herb garden was left as it was.  Sadly the next morning it snowed for the entire day and night.  All that might have been saved was killed by the snow.  ALSO all of my tropical canas were plummeted to the ground for an early death.  They were cheated out of at least 2 more weeks of life.  Some were around 10 feet high so imagine my despair when I drove home to see that the canas that line my entire house and patio were smothered, bent and broken, bleeding red blossoms, suffering under wicked white stupid 9 inches of snow. I had just recently accepted fall and now look, WINTER. What. the. hell.

you can freeze a bunch of dill. Just put it in a plastic bag. I did this when my dill was ready before the cucumbers and I wanted to make pickles. I also freeze cilantro this way, too - but you have to use these frozen herbs in some kind of liquidy thing, not sprinkled on top. The taste is still there!

Our yard got pummeled too, what a freak snow storm! We left in our carrots so I will see what happens to them.

What a cool garden! Nothing is better than home-grown vegetables!
