AUTUMN~ NOW I Feel Ya

As you know, I resist the seasonal change, especially the cold seasons. In fact, I heard a line recently from my latest television obsession "FRINGE" where the character Peter said, "You know what I hate worse than being cold?...NOT MUCH".  and I wholeheartedly agree. HOWEVER, the coming of Thanksgiving and the awesome produce at Central Market this morning sort of "got me going". I felt like I was carrying a Cornucopia in my market bags and that felt good.  Above is a selection of ingredients that I'll be using for Thanksgiving dinner.  Pearl onions. How cute!  Meyer lemons and pomegranate for drinks, fennel and squash which I've already done a test run on...
Here they are raw and ready to be cooked.  The colors looked so fresh I decided to photograph them.  Just oil, salt and pepper. that's all i did. But the best part was the final result. The combination of flavors was INSANELY AWESOME. The small butternut squash sliced thin and baked with roughly chopped fennel was perfect. I didn't think it could be so perfect. In fact, nate and I declared that we could have eaten this side dish alone AS the meal and been totally satisfied.
Now Russell, if you are reading this, please don't panic. I plan to make Dad's stuffing with WHITE ITALIAN BREAD and mashed potatoes and Nate will make a brined turkey that will blow minds...BUT I will have interesting sides for the more refined and tolerant palate ie... me, nate and mom.  And for anyone else that is interested in the wine photo let me just relay this tip...Hurry to the spirits shop and find this in the Latin wine section.  It's so darn lovely and it's only $8.99. Don't worry about pairing red wine with poultry. Who cares. It's Thanksgiving. No one gives a DAMN.  Happy Thanksgiving Early.
